Beechworth Primary School addresses the learning needs of each and every child. Our Curriculum program runs on a repeating 2 year cycle, and covers all aspects of the VELS (Victorian Essential Learning Standards), emphasising Literacy and Numeracy. Year 1 of the cycle has a strong focus on Science and Technology topics, while Year 2 focuses on Humanities and Geography. In addition, our 'Learning To Learn' program is designed to establish positive learning skills and habits: students learn the importance of how to be a good learner, of team work, and good habits of the mind.
We have teachers dedicated to specialist programs in Performing Arts, Music and Visual Arts. Our LOTE (Languages Other Than English) program focuses on Indonesian language, and more generally, on promoting a cultural and geographic awareness of southeast Asia. We also offer an excellent Sports program, with opportunities for students to compete at regional through to state levels. For further information, please refer to the below Specialist Programs. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Our music program encourages children to explore movement and rhythm, and introduces them to both singing and playing music (using marimba, glockenspiel and percussive instruments). Students further develop these skills by working on musical performances, which are incorporated into the School's theatrical productions. The School has its own Choir and Maypole Dancers. Extra-curricular lessons in guitar, piano and violin are also available during school hours. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
VELS & AUSVELS
Determining the specific learning requirements of each child is the key to our highly successful literacy and numeracy program. Our program is based on the Victorian Essentials Learning Standards (VELS), and rather than focus generally on whole classes, we 'fluid-group' children according to ability. This facilitates more accurate teaching. Within groups, children may also have individual learning plans designed to fit their needs. In this way, gaps in individual learning are continually identified, and teaching is fine-tuned to address them.Knowing precisely which literacy and numeracy concepts each child needs to develop ensures the progression of all students. The positive results can be seen in Beechworth Primary School's National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) test scores. Over the last four years, the School has seen a continuing upward trend across all NAPLAN scores, with scores in maths and reading well aboveVictorian state standards for comparable schools. For this reason, Beechworth Primary School won the Hume Region School Improvement Award in 2011.For more information on VELS click here. Transition & Buddy Program
At Beechworth Primary School we value the importance of the transition between pre-school and school. Our School has a positive relationship with the local pre-schools and strives to ensure that every child experiences a smooth and positive start to school. Pre-school children attend 4 transition days, which are spread over Term 4 each year. Children experience all aspects of school during these days and spend time with our specialist teachers.
Our Buddy Program supports all Prep children commencing school by creating nurturing relationships between new children and senior students, ensuring that Preps feel safe and confident in their new environment. Each year in Term 3 our Year 5 students are paired up with a pre-school student whom will visit them in the pre-school environment. During our Transition days in Term 4, the Year 5 students will greet their buddy and spend the first part of the day with them. This support will continue at the start of the school year, and both students are able to develop positive relationships that continue right through the student's education. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
At Beechworth Primary School we have a dedicated performing arts teacher, with a program structured around the creation and presentation of theatrical productions by both Junior (Prep-2) and Senior Schools (3-6). Students learn self-confidence through acting, performance and public speaking, and also learn aspects of stage craft such as set design, and sound production using a professional mixing desk and sound system. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
